What is AgilePM?
AgilePM (Agile Project Management) is a project management approach that offers a highly flexible and adaptive way of managing projects. It was developed by the Agile Business Consortium to address the need for a project management framework that could work in an agile environment.
AgilePM certification is offered through APMG International, with two levels of qualification available:
Examinations are managed by PeopleCert on behalf of AXELOS.
PRINCE2 Agile isn’t a separate approach, but rather an integration of PRINCE2, which has been modified and optimized for an agile framework.
Comparing PRINCE2 Agile and AgilePM
PRINCE2 Agile and AgilePM are both agile project management frameworks. Despite their differences, both are intended to help manage projects effectively in an agile environment.
Both frameworks have a defined process or lifecycle, clearly defined roles, and guidelines for delivering products. They also offer a range of tools and techniques for managing projects effectively.
Using Scrum and Kanban with PRINCE2 Agile and AgilePM
Scrum and Kanban are not agile project management frameworks, but they can be used in conjunction with both PRINCE2 Agile and AgilePM. You cannot manage a project with Scrum or Kanban alone, but they can be integrated into either approach.
Which is best – AgilePM or PRINCE2 Agile?
Both AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile frameworks have gained a reputation for being reliable and effective project management approaches in the agile industry. However, they are not meant to replace other agile methodologies such as Scrum, as each of these methods serves a different purpose.
Which is best for individuals?
For individuals looking to enhance their CV or develop their skillset, we recommend the following:
- If you have completed a PRINCE2 certification (Foundation or Practitioner), even if it has lapsed, then you should opt for PRINCE2 Agile. This approach builds on your previous knowledge of PRINCE2 and makes it more versatile and relevant.
- If you do not possess any PRINCE2 qualifications, then AgilePM is the better option, as it is currently the most sought-after certification and is more likely to appear on job advertisements.
Making the Best Choice for Organizations
The choice between AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile can be challenging for organizations. The decision should be based on your current situation and objectives.
It’s not possible to say which framework is better because it depends on your organization’s unique situation. You should take into account your prevailing way of working:
- If you are currently using PRINCE2, it would be best to go for PRINCE2 Agile.
- If you already have an agile project management process, it’s recommended to explore both frameworks to see if they offer enhancements to your existing practices.
- If you’re starting from scratch, AgilePM is a credible and cost-effective option that has been available since the mid-nineties.
Although PRINCE2 is more recognizable globally as a “brand,” and the PRINCE2 Agile guidance is more comprehensive and up-to-date, AgilePM may be the faster and cheaper option for organizations.
Alternative Agile Project Management Certifications
In addition to AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile, there are several other agile project management certifications available in the market. One such certifications is offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI) which is very popular in North America.
PMI offers an agile ‘add-on’ called PMI-ACP to its PMBOK framework. While there are other agile project management frameworks that exist, not all of them have independently supervised accreditations.
